Long-tailed ducks are boldly patterned in black and white. The males have very long central tail feathers. They are generally uncommon on the coast during the summer but may be very numerous during the Pacific herring spawning season, forming concentrations in the thousands. Some speakers say that in the old days young people were told not to shoot long-tailed ducks, which they regarded as a rare bird.
