Ethnobiological notes
The elk, sometimes known as wapiti, is a large member of the deer family. Two subspecies are known in British Columbia—one in the Rocky Mountains and another on Vancouver Island. The Vancouver Island type was once more widely distributed, living in the Fraser Delta and some coastal islands.
