Ethnobiological notes
The western grebe is a large, slender grebe with a very long neck. The back of the head, neck and body are dark while the undersides are white. This bird is locally known by various names, such as “diver”, “long-necked diver”, and “helldiver”. Western grebes may be observed year round on the southern coast of British Columbia but are said to be good to eat only during December and January.
