- The shiner perch, often referred to simply as “shiner”, is a small, silvery fish that is commonly seen in schools around wharfs and pilings where they are sometimes caught for fun by children. Shiners may also turn up in fishing nets. Native fishermen sometimes use shiners as bait when jigging for lingcod.
